Times I think of my father

When I say ‘it sounds like he’s got a hole in his exhaust’ about boy-racers/hoons.

When the children are exhausting and I want to know how he coped.

When the children are being wonderful and I wish he could see them.

When I see an older man in the sort of farmery checked shirt he used to wear.

When I wonder if I’m brushing my teeth too much and recall him saying his dentist told him he was.

When I see trees cut round the telegraph wires and remember he thought they looked like chickens.

When I get that lower back period pain and remember the time he gave me a massage, and how generally great he was about periods.

When I’m angry with someone I love and remember his warning to me.

When I go for a run on a cold morning.
