Deliciously healthy bars that don’t compromise on taste

Ok, it’s probably fair to say that my quest to find the greatest healthy snacks is becoming something of an obsession. But now we’re back in lockdown seems as good a time as any to indulge in this. And I think I may have found an item close to perfection, the actual answer to the question ‘what is the best tasting health food bar?’: We Bar None wholefood energy bars.

On the surface, We Bar None isn’t that different to other bars. They rely on the old favourites of dates and nuts, but somehow they manage to be way more flavoursome than your average. 100% vegan, they’re also gluten free, and come in six flavours: Coconut, Gingerbread, Mint Choc, Chocolate, Aztec and Turkish Delight. As usual with bars full of dates, some of the flavour profiles of these blend together a little, but there are still some standouts. I’d never have expected it, but my favourite flavour is Turkish Delight. I love eating the real thing, but Turkish delight ‘flavoured’ things are usually deeply disappointing – but that’s certainly not the case here!

In addition to being healthy and tasty, these bars come in home compostable packaging and are made right here in Australia. Creator Ellen Burns has gained a lot of traction with the bars, but the company still has a pleasingly home-spun with a professional edge feel to it. The bars themselves are pretty good value – if you know you like them (and will get through them!) you can spend $100 and get 30 bars. I went for the sample pack, which gives you one of each flavour at $5 per bar. I think $100 feels like a bit too much of a commitment, so I’ll be going for the medium pack of 12 at $55 in future. This price compares well with other options on the market, and keeps it fairly affordable.

I’ve been eating these when I want a quick breakfast, a light lunch, or a healthy alternative to the afternoon cakes or biscuits. They’re just the right size, and really satisfying. The variety of flavours is good, and although I have my favourites, there aren’t any I don’t like.

So if you don’t fancy trying every bar on the market and want to go straight for a tasty, vegan and relatively eco-friendly option, I’d highly recommend giving We Bar None a go.
