Making the leap from the dreaming spires to marvelous Melbourne

Over the last few years I’ve been daring myself to try new things and get out of my comfort zone. I’m going to be 29 this year, and the approach of the final year of my twenties seems as good a time as any to push the boundaries a bit and see what I can accomplish. I’ve taken this to almost its logical conclusion by quitting my job and moving to the other side of the world. I’ve moved to Melbourne, Australia. My comfort zone feels very far behind me right now!

I’ve now been here for just over a week. Jetlag is wearing off, and I’m starting to feel a bit more settled in my new country. Getting here has been a very long process, fulls of worries and ups and downs, and there are still a lot of things to finalise, but at the moment I’m just feeling excited about the road ahead.

In researching my move I found surprisingly little up-to-date, free information about even the basics of getting to Australia from the UK. So I thought I’d make this the first in a series of posts looking at my literal and metaphorical journey, in the hopes of providing advice and reassurance to others in a similar situation.

In terms of The Feminist Gadabout there won’t be much change – there’ll still be a mix of lifestyle, culture, travel, reviews and so on. There’ll be a bit more of a southern hemisphere lean to it, but I’ve still got lots of European material to write up, so it won’t be all kangaroos and coffee shops.

At present I’m here for the next two years or so, living abroad for the first time in my life. I’ve excited to bring you along with me on this adventure of a lifetime!
