Picks and Passes: Moolk Maternity

Reviewing my favourite breastfeeding friendly brand

I may technically not need maternity clothes anymore, but there is one thing you can never have enough of: breastfeeding friendly clothes. They make life so much easier when you’re nursing a little one, and once you don’t need them any more, they just become normal clothes! It has been surprisingly hard to find good nursing friendly clothes though, so I was delighted to discover Moolk. The name is a maybe a little bit literal for some people’s tastes (!), but I’ve bought quite a few pieces from them and love each of them.

One of the things I like about Moolk is that they don’t make hundreds of different styles. They make a small selection of styles in various colours, which they release at intervals. When something goes into the sale, it really does seem to be on sale until there isn’t a single one left. This is a great sign that they’re not a fast fashion company. They have recently released some new items for pre-order, many of which I love. However, I am currently doing a No Spend Year when it comes to clothes! So instead of buying them myself, I’m living vicariously, and sharing the items I’d pick, and a few I might pass on, in this post.

I’d love to hear which are your favourite pieces too!

Pick – Augie Knit

One of my first purchases from Moolk was this jumper on a dark Turquoise colour. I absolutely love it, and it got so much use in the early days when I was at home and nursing seemingly every couple of hours. The zip is really long, which makes it super easy access for feeding. My one criticism is that the zip is metal, and I was worried it might scratch my baby’s delicate skin. Thankfully that didn’t happen, so maybe I needn’t have worried. They’ve now brought it out in two of my favourite colours, green and burgundy. Safe to say that if I were buying clothes this year, these would definitely end up in my closet!

Pass – Clover dress

In theory I love the look of this dress, and it’s a pretty similar cut to their [insert name] dress which I have in black, and wear all the time. However I think the cut of this isn’t quite so appealing to me. I’m relatively tall, so suspect it would end up looking a bit short on me. Coupled with the width and layers of the skirt, I’d be worried that any little gust or wind would catch it and have me bearing all to the world! Needless to say though, I love this colour.

Pick – Lola Knit Top

I am sorely tempted to break my no buy rule for this top. I love a stripy tee, and actually have loads of them. I even have a couple of nursing friendly ones, from Ripe Maternity. However, they’re pretty heavy and thick, and made from a slightly stretchy fabric. The opening in both is a layered one, meaning I often feel a bit bundled up and like I’ve got a lot of fabric to juggle. The Little zip function on this top looks way easier to use. It’s a nice stripe, and the slightly fitted shape gives it some versatility- it could pass as workwear or casual. I’m going to have to resist it, but don’t be surprised if I pick this up in a sale or second hand next year!

Pass – Como top in Posy

This is a really cute top, and I love the print. It’s the kind of easy piece I can imagine throwing on when I’m not quite sure what to wear, and of course the buttons make it nicely nursing friendly. However, I bought a very similar top from them last year, and much as I love it, I haven’t found myself wearing it all that much. That may be because the fit wasn’t perfce t to start off with, but I think it’s safe to say that I probably only need one version of this top as it stands. I slightly prefer this print to the one I have though, so if I could go again, this would be a pick not a pass!

Pick – Freya Knit

One of the things about nursing is that it’s hard to layer. Even if you have two nursing friendly pieces, lining up the opening and dealing with all the layers (tucking them under your armpit, holding them up with your chin while you cling on to the baby, etc) can be a bit of a pain. Therein lies the appeal of this knit. It looks ideal for just easily lifting up when you’re nursing. The cropped length would not only sit well with a lot of my high waisted pieces, but it would also mean there’s not too much fabric to grapple with while you’re feeding. The colour is an obvious win, and I love the floral detailing in the knit pattern itself. Super cute, and easy to wear. This would certainly make a lovely addition to my wardrobe.

So there you have it, my picks from Moolk Maternity! I love that they have quite a small catalogue – you’re not endlessly scrolling, and you can be confident that you’re not buying into the usual fast fashion habits. Each piece has been considered for how it works in a person’s wardrobe, and how it fits with their other pieces. No wonder I found so many of them hard to resist! Do you own any Moolk?
